Stewart twins help Dons take home 5A state girls title PDF Print E-mail

Twins aren't always identical and they certainly don't always have the same experiences.

Even dominant Spanish Fork senior sisters Nachelle and Natalie Stewart had very different views on their final day of action at the state track and field tournament at BYU on Saturday.

They did, however, get to experience the thrill of team success together one final time in the high school ranks as they led the Dons to the girls 5A state championship.

"This is what we wanted," said Nachelle Stewart. "Of course you want to do well in the individual events, but winning overall was the No. 1 goal. Getting the title makes me happy."

Natalie Stewart had a number of personal accolades to add as well, as she won first place in all three of her individual events (100 meters, 200m and 400m).

"Personally I'd never gotten first in all three of the individual races," Natalie said. "That was really exciting and I'm proud of that."

Nachelle was able to anchor the 4x400-meter relay team and finished off another first place for Spanish Fork.

"That was the last race of high school for me," she said. "It was awesome to get first. I didn't have the day I wanted overall, but the relay win was a great way to finish."

The Dons powered to a 16-point win over second-place Davis (105-89), but Spanish Fork coaches Dave Boyack and Bart Thompson still had a few anxious moments near the end.

"We were ahead by nine points heading into the final relay and so many things can happen," he explained. "False starts, dropped batons, disqualifications, I just kept going over the things in my mind. But they ran well. Every kid did exactly what we told them to do."

It's the fifth title for Boyack at Spanish Fork, but he said winning never gets old.

"It's just a thrill," he said. "Every one is as special as the last, but the best one is the one that just happened. This is our last year with an outstanding group of seniors and saying goodbye is going to be hard, but doing it this way makes it easier."

Other 5A girls that won individual titles on Saturday include Lone Peak's Lacey Cramer in the 800m, Lone Peak's Angela Kaplar in the 100m hurdles, and the Timpanogos medley relay team.

Things didn't go quite as well on the boys side for Timpanogos. The Timberwolves were hoping for a second-place finish behind Davis, but a fumbled handoff on a relay made that impossible.

"It's disappointing that it cost us second place, but the boys stepped up after that and I'm pleased with their performance," said Timpanogos head coach Jody Benson. "From the team aspect, it was awesome to see them step up."

The T'Wolves ended up in fourth place with 52 points overall, 10 points behind second place Fremont.

Other 5A boys champions included Spanish Fork's Spencer Fawsett in the javelin and Timberwolf Taylor Lyons in the 100m.
