T'Wolves kick past Knights; Payson makes playoffs PDF Print E-mail

Home, away, the Timpanogos boys soccer team just could never seem to find the way to get over the hump.

No doubt about it, Lone Peak had the number of the Timberwolves, always coming up with the victory or at least a tie.

Until Thursday, that is.

Timpanogos scored late in the first half and held off everything the Knights could through at them, picking up the 1-0 win in the final game of the regular season for both teams.

"For the first time all season, from the first whistle to the last, we wanted the game," said T'Wolf head coach Aaron Barth. "I thought we out-hustled them. That meant a lot to the seniors, who haven't been able to beat them. To do it in the final game on their home field was great."

Both teams had to deal with the muddy, boggy conditions of the field, which appeared not to have drained well after the rainstorm on Wednesday. Players lost their footing, the ball skipped around and proved to be slippery.

That made a difference in the contest, as Timpanogos freshman forward Winston Sorhaitz fired a shot only minutes before halftime that the Lone Peak keeper appeared to have under control, but the ball squirted away and crossed the line into the goal before he could recover it.

"That's what made it come down to hustle," Barth said. "Since both teams were slipping, it was who wanted it more."

The conditions damaged the Knight approach to the game, since the visitors knew they were going up against a T'Wolf defense that was good in the air.

"In order to beat them, we needed to keep the ball on the ground," Lone Peak head coach Dave Woolley said. "We couldn't get any stability with the ball because of the field."

Neither team changed position in the standings but the Knights missed out on an opportunity to take first place from Lehi.

Timpanogos' Josh Ostler got the shutout in goal, coming up with some great saves.

The T'Wolves were without junior captain Trevor Henderson, who has been out for 2 1/2 weeks due to injury, while junior Carlos Kidman was back for the first time since missing three games with a hamstring injury.

Lone Peak will be the No. 2 seed when the playoffs begin on Tuesday and will host Weber, while Timpanogos (No. 3) will head on the road to play at Fremont the same day. Both games are slated to start at 4 p.m.

REGION 7 PLAY-IN GAME

• Payson 7, Provo 2: At Springville, sophomore Brett Carter pitched 4 2/3 strong innings and Spencer Smith and Mitchell Cowden combined for five RBI in the first two innings to send the Lions (12-11, 6-6) into the 4A playoffs and send Provo (12-11, 6-6) back home.

Carter scattered six hits and stfuck out two, while getting strong defensive play behind him, to allow the Lions to keep ace Tyson Memmott, who pitched Monday, in the bullpen until he needed just seven outs . When Memmott relieved Carter, he struck out the first four Bulldogs he faced and allowed just one hit to seal the victory.

Smith had a two-run double in the first inning, and Cowden followed with a single to drive Smith in. In the escond inning, Smith singled home a run and later scored on Cowden's sacrifice fly. That was more than enough runs for Carter and Memmott, but Cody Ferguson added two RBI later in the game.
