Day 1 of the Region 4 track championship finally happened.
Thanks to the thunderstorms that drenched the valley the previous day, the first shot of the starting gun was a full 24 hours later than its original start, but it finally sounded, kicking off the two-day event.
The condition of the track seemed to raise little concern to teams, thanks to the synthetic material of the track at American Fork High School, as the Cavemen played host to the six-team meet.
"You know it didn't look like the rain affected the kids much today," said Dave Boyack, Spanish Fork's head coach. "Everything was pretty much dried up and it was really a nice day to be out here."
Boyack's Spanish Fork girls team was the story of the day and showed just how it earned last year's state title, sprinting out to a 55-point lead after only four scored women's events held on Thursday.
"We ran well today but where we really shined, what impressed me was how well we did in the field events, too, which was really nice," Boyack said.
The girls squad from Spanish Fork finished first in 1,600-meter sprint medley, long jump, discus throw and swept the top three spots in the javelin throw, as their field events matched the level of talent of the Dons' dominate sprinters.
Spanish Fork qualified for the finals in all of the five remaining girls events, which will be ran today. The battle for second place on the girls side appears to be between Timpanogos and Lehi, with the Timberwolves holding a slim three-point lead.
The Timpanogos boys find themselves in the first spot in a tighter fight for the top spot in the boys competition, with Lone Peak behind them trailing by seven points and American Fork holding the third spot.
The boys high jump was a tight race with a four way tie for third place, behind Pleasant Grove's Scott Matheson and Jared Allridge in first and second respectively. Matheson set the high mark, jumping 6 feet, 4 inches, while Allridge jumped 6-flat.
The second half of the meet is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today, despite the stormy weather which has been forecasted.
