Orem, Springville take titles; T'Birds bid coach goodbye PDF Print E-mail

With four of its team members capping off the Region 7 Championship with a near-record-setting win in the 4x400-meter relay, the Orem boys took the Region 7 crown by a resounding margin Thursday at Timpview High in Provo.

Mountain View, led by Kelsey Brown's two new region records, took first place on the girls side of the competition, 22 points ahead of second-place Orem.

Brown set a new Region 7 record in the 400m with a time of 58.29, a full second ahead of the old record set by Provo's Kassi Andersen seven years ago. Brown then smashed another of Andersen's records, this one in the 800m, winning in 2:18.97, more than two seconds faster than the previous record set in 1999.

Brown's teammate Katie Harris was second to Brown in both events, with Harris also beating Andersen's mark in the 800m. The Bruins used an 11-second victory in the 1,600m medley relay to solidify the team's win.

The Orem boys literally ran away with the Region 7 trophy, coming in 41 points ahead of second-place Timpview with 146 points. The Tiger effort was highlighted by Logan McNeil's performance in the 400m. McNeil also set a new region record, beating the old mark by five-hundredths of a second.

"I didn't even think about it," McNeil said of the record. "I was just running to not lose. I didn't want to embarrass myself. I found that I had more energy than I thought. It's more than I could've dreamed of."

Orem was also aided from wins by Michael McKell in the 800 meters, Landon Lloyd in the long jump, and Alec Kusic in the discus, along with numerous other top five finishes.

Timpview coach Brian Kuhlmann was honored midway through the meet by current athletes and a large number of alumni celebrating Kuhlmann's retirement after 39 years coach track and field.

"It's been a fun day," Kuhlmann said. "It felt like Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds.' I saw two alumni over there and then two more over there, and then a whole bunch came."

Though neither Timpview team could pull out a first-place finish, the T'Birds did have a pair of sprinters who had stand-out performances. Tyler Goodwin set a new region record, while teammate Vaughan Greening came in a close second, in the 200m, a race which saw nine runners finish under the state qualifying time. Goodwin and Greening also went 1-2 in the 100m, with Goodwin winning by four-hundredths of a second.

"They're a good bunch of kids," Kuhlmann said. "I was pleased with our efforts. We had improvement everywhere, it was crazy."

The Springville girls had two double winners, as Natalie Young came out on top in the 100m and 200m and Allissa Huffaker won both 100m and 300m hurdles.

A bit of controversy occurred during the running of the boys 300m hurdles, as the lead pack made its final turn. As Springville's Tanner Nackos came around, a competitor in the long jump pit nearby accidently bumped Nackos, who had been in fourth place. Nackos finished sixth, one spot out of qualifying for state. After the judges and coaches conferred, the decision was made to have Nackos and fifth-place finisher Jake Robison of Orem re-run the race, despite the dismay of the Orem coaches. With neither runner having qualified for state, Nackos and Robison lined up to see who would claim the fifth and final spot. Robison repeated his winning run over Nackos to qualify.
