Xavier Su'A Filo wasn't even supposed to be in the game when he changed it for good, but Friday night in Salt Lake City, Timpview needed an extra effort from someone on the defensive side of the ball if it was to beat Cottonwood and win its third straight 4A football title.

A state football championship game brings out dramatic emotion, not just during and after the game, but before it as well.

The Timpview Thunderbirds graciously allowed me to join them for the entire day, from gathering for breakfast in the morning at Magleby's Grill in Provo to the lingering celebration after their exciting 34-28 victory over Cottonwood, and every step in between.

The Timpview Thunderbirds finished a season that was full of records and storylines in style on Friday. The T'Birds' 34-28 state 4A championship victory over the Cottonwood Colts kept many streaks alive, and finished many players' careers with thoughts of perfection.

One game left.

Win or lose, both the Timpview and Cottonwood football teams will end the season.

But one will have the satisfaction of ending with a win -- and a 4A state championship.

I love upsets.

Watching the little guys stand up and take out the supposedly unbeatable giant is one of the great thrills of sports at all levels and has been since David literally squared off against Goliath.
